Director: Brian Mendoza

'Sweet Girl' Plot & Summary:

At the beginning of the movie "Sweet Girl," we meet Jonas Momoa as Ray Cooper, his daughter Isabela Merced as Rachel, and his wife Adria Arjona as Amanda. Amanda has cancer. When a life-changing medication to treat cancer is soon to be available on the market for the patients, Big Pharma strikes. The CEO of a leading medical manufacturing company, BioPrime, pays the new drug manufacturer off to ensure BioPrime continues making money. When Ray gets to know about this scam, he threatens to kill BioPrime's CEO if his wife dies due to the unavailability of the medication.

However, sadly, Amanda dies. Ray keeps his word and sets off on a mission to expose BioPrime's injustices and get revenge for his wife. Little than he knew, there were even more sinister forces at play. Soon, Ray and his daughter Rachel find themselves in a conspiracy that gets uglier at every turn.

The movie 'Sweet Girl' is a sprawling, bruising, sometimes emotionally complicated, often exhausting drama with action sequences stitched into it. And at the end of the film, there's a major twist that changes the meaning of the movie entirely.

To make it a good review for you, we are adding the spoilers here. **

Where's the Twist?

It Was Ra(y)chel All Along the Revenge Journey!

Later in the movie, it is found that Ray Cooper was dead because of the fatal wound he had earlier in the movie. And, we've seen Rachel in the whole revenge quest. Another interesting reveal was that the audience has been following for most of this movie was that Rachel got the professional fight training for 24 months and all of this was nothing more than a fabrication of Rachel's fractured personality. When she lost both of her parents, she got into severe trauma in a tragic and unjust manner.

You may ask here:

  • Why is Jason Momoa's Ray narrating the movie the whole time?
  • Was the aim of 'Sweet Girl' to simply trick the audience into that ridiculous reveal?
  • How silly it is that little Rachel is able to take on hired professional killers and personal bodyguards?
  • Is 24 months of training at your local gym enough to make you dispose of trained assassins as if you've been doing it all your life?

Well, we leave these questions for you to answer. So, watch the movie to get all the puzzles resolved!

Stream it or not?

Rating: 1.5/5

Well, the answer varies from person to person. If you are into unpredictable movie plots and stories, you should give it a try. However, there are a few reasons based on which the larger number of audiences has marked it as a 'not-worthy movie to watch.' Let's see what those are:

Negative: Nothing new

The movie has the traditional 'underdog vs. the corrupt system' theme that fails to outgrow it from any perspective. The problem is vague by the rushed screenplay that mixes up the impact of an already underwhelming narrative.

Negative: Bold yet ineffective twist

The events involving Momoa and his reel daughter are really mind-gripping. However, it could be a lot better. The confused twist towards the end fails to satisfy the audience as it isn't convincing.

Negative: Technical aspects

The background music in the movie fails to go along with the narrative as it feels quite generic. The editing is uninteresting as the film seems to be dragged at several points.

Positive: It's About Family

Aside from the plentiful action and unpredictable twists, "Sweet Girl" exemplifies the strength of a familial bond. Amanda's passing serves as a catalyst for Ray and Rachel. They are so in grief and devastated by her death that their lives are drastically changed. Their future journeys become almost obsessed with avenging the death of Amanda, and their trauma is obvious throughout the film.
